Rumpus was struggling. His paw was getting worse. Much worse. The soft black pads were swollen and throbbing. Dark yellow pus seeped out of the deepest gash, no matter how hard he tried to keep it clean. It hurt to put any weight on it, and climbing in and out of the hollow was getting harder and harder.

As the afternoon waned, he limped slowly toward the stream. He was thirsty and the cold, dry air didn’t help. He wasn’t far from the edge of the forest when he stepped out of the brush and onto one of the forest tracks. He did not expect to see an elderly woman walking a small dog. She did not expect to see him. They locked eyes for a second, before she started screaming and the dog started barking.

Rumpus turned and hobbled back beneath the cover of the trees as quickly as he could. He did not stop moving until he had made it back to the old oak. His paw throbbed uncontrollably, and the pain gripped the full length of his leg and shoulder. The wind whined through the wood, and he felt the old branches above him sway from side to side. He did not understand what had happened or why the woman had screamed like that. There was still so much about this place that did not make sense. He turned to licking his paw. The effort of so much running was overwhelming. Something felt terribly wrong.

The moon rose, smothered in cloud and blurred at the edges. Night closed in on Wildoak Forest. Rumpus fell in and out of a restless, painful sleep.
